Default I need help finding a good anit-virus

Well... I guess im writing this post because my free subscription to my Norton360 and Webroot SpySweeper is about to expire and I just want people's opinion on whether to renew or to look for a new anti-virus and spy sweeper. Also if I was to look for a new one, which one would be the best one. I know that this isn't a computer website but I know nothing about these things and I just need people's input before investing my money.

(btw sorry about what happened to your computer Liladypokerpro... its actually one of the reasons I wrote this)

Thanks for help,
Ryzant

I always had good experiences with BitDefender. I wish I had it before this computer caught a virus, but didn't get it put on there quick enough. Oh well...anyway...

BitDefender is a good one, and the newest release is BitDefender 2009. For one computer for a full year of licensing you can get it for $24.99 and download it directly from the site, plus they'll send you a hard copy on disk if you ask for it.

I like BitDefender because it doesn't just concentrate on Trojans or other common viruses, it also seeks out adware and spyware, (worms, etc.) and doesn't just quarantine it like most other programs, but rather destroys it altogether.

Always with any purchase or investment, it's best to look up many different ones and weigh the pros and cons before deciding. Good luck!

Ryzant, I suggest AVG. Check it out if you haven't decided on one yet.

AVG has great Anti-Virus and Spyware protection.

Lynda, although AVG's full version might offer more protection, the free version was actually on my other computer that got whacked by a mean virus...AVG didn't detect it at all...so that's the only reason I suggested BitDefender instead because their database seems to have a much wider scan range, as far as the types of baddies it detects...like I said tho I don't know about the full version it might very well be just as good as BitDefender, I just know the free version failed me miserably.

Default Virus Protection

I have used Windows Live One Care in the past and it worked successfully. The only reason i switched is because the one I have now comes with DSL and is charged to my bill so i don't have to worry about paying for updates and what not.

Personally I would avoid Norton at all costs. Its very intrusive on the PC and nothing more than commercial junk IMO. All these security suites and whatever aren't really necessary and too overpriced. Free safe surfing is available and the people who make it available really do care, just make a small donation once a year or so from your poker winnings.

Anti virus I use Avast 4.8 Home Edition, just register/re-register it by e-mail annually - free

SpywareBlaster - a one-off installation which will place a ton of known malicious sites in your restricted sites zone so if you do accidentally land on them, you're safe. Just keep it updated as more malicious sites become known - free

SpywareGuard - another one-off installation which gives realtime protection whilst surfing - free

Zone alarm firewall - free

Mozilla firefox with McAfee site advisor installed for all my random surfing - free

Always keep windows security patches updated - free

Keep java updated - free

Hassle-free surfing

Seriously, if you keep getting viruses, you are doing something wrong...

AVG + not going to a load of dodgy sites = success

Default protection against virus

first of all - keep away from the porn sites, they tend to attach malware. (so wear a condom)
I use kaspersky, new updates daily. (about $70)
I run a scan weekly or as needed.
Surfing without trouble.

Well sadly it wasn't me who did it...I only go to a set few sites and always stick to those sites. Someone wanted to look up song lyrics and clicked on something she shouldn't have lol But it's okay now she's more aware of the risks and from now on waits until I get home to verify the validity of a site

Lady, I didn't know it was the free version of AVG that you had when your computer became infected!!! Sorry to hear about that. I am glad that your BitDefender is working well for you!

I completely trust the full version of AVG. Never had a problem.

I guess whatever works, right?
