Default Wireles laptop, connection anywhere?

Well, I have a wireless laptop and I want to know if there is some kind of equipment that can I buy or service so that I can get internet anywhere. Meaning, if I'm in the car or at a friends house I want to be able to connect to the internet. I know that you can use a cellphone to connect and go to a place with wifi. Are there any other options?

I would like to know the answer to this question also. I have a router, but I seem to lose my connection if I go to the other end of the house. I saw a commercial on television that Verizon Wireless offers a wireless adapter and you can take you notebook with you anywhere. Check with Dell and other computer manufactures.

Yeah, I found out recently that Verizon, Cingular, and Sprint offer data cards with a service. Also, I hear that there are connection, signal, and speed problems. Yeah I use a router with my laptop but I don't have any connection problems. What router do you have hooked up to your modem?

Recently I've been using bluetooth connection with my cell phone to connect my laptop to the Internet. The USB bluetooth adapter cost about $15 so it wasn't a big investment.. of course you need a phone which supports bluetooth.

So basically my computer uses my cell phone to connect to the internet with 3G connection. 3G gives me max. 384 Kbps connection speed which is well enough. Best part is that I don't have to worry about line of sight with cell phone (like with infrared), for example my phone can be in the other end of the house.

The 3G network in Finland is available in most places, but this is also something you want to check if you are connecting with a cell phone (or GSM card). The older (2nd generation) GPRS connection is way too slow to do anything.

The phone I'm using is Nokia N90, but I'm pretty sure almost all phones nowdays support bluetooth and 3G networks (or better).

In conclusion connecting to the internet has been pretty effortless this way. Just the way I like it.

Hi everyone,

Maybe you heard such thing as WiMax, its the next technology after Wifi, I used it for 6-7 months in Estonia, and connection was quite good. You can try to find something similar in Google for your own country. Good luck

You should get a D-Link range booster. They cost about $60. I would doubt if you can use it in your car. You'd still need access keys and/or password to connect into someone else's wireless network (eg: University, hot spot on private property).

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I got the wireless internet from Alltell. The express card was 100 bucks and service is 59 a month. I have no trouble whatsoever with it and get service anywhere. It is definetly worth it, I recommend it to anyone.
