Default How do you keep an healthy living?

Hi,

I wonder how poker pros, semi-pros, big online players of any kind or yourself handle the fact we are mostly sticked to a computer screen?
Running, sport each day for many?

I try myself to make a lot of sport (I'm webmaster at first) but heh it's not that easy...

I've read that many professionnal poker players are taking poker like a real sport and keep a very healthy life through strict food and daily runnings, IMHO that's mostly a myth

We do spend an awful lot of time on our butts lol, but I usually schedule breaks for myself when not involved in a tournament. Fix a small meal, have some coffee, take a walk, just do something peaceful and relaxing to help clear my mind and energize my body. I have some underlying health problems, so I can't be too physical, so Poker kind of fits the bill for my lifestyle.

One thing I do recommend to everyone who spends a lot of time seated...occasionally move your legs, folding one over the other, then switching legs, then stretching them far out, and get up and walk around for about 10 minutes every few hours. This will keep the blood flow from being restricted.

Believe it or not, a buddy of mine actually developed a blood clot in his leg from too much sitting and not enough movement! So it's very important to change positions often and get up and move around a bit every so often.

I don't get to play as much or very often but I love to work out since I am a lifeguard at a community center I get to use the equipment there plus I have a total gym and I love it. I was in the Marine Corps also and so I am in very good shape and want to stay that way as long as possible.

I go to the gym 3-5 times a week, I like to work out, and my line of work requires me to be in at least a fairly good shape. Other than the gym, I play tennis and badminton, some basketball and soccer every once in a while and during winters I try play hockey as often as possible. Poker has definetely taken up a lot of my "free time", but I'm doing my best.

That made me smile... Good point thought about playing tired, one should never do that, simply because the number of mistakes goes made by you goes up exponentially.

Default Conditioning

I condition my body to keep a good pace while playing poker. 2 beers an hour seems to suit me fine. Throw in some smoke and munchies and all is well. No need to worry about sitting for hours, it comes easily with the above recipe.

Enjoy.................

Default Out of shape grinder

Been playing full time now for 7 months, and have noticed that ive lost strength and gained wait, even tho I do alot of heavy housework and play golf once a week. Frustrating, I need to come up with a daily excercise routine apparantly, otherwise it simply wont be worth the toll its taking on my body.

We own a treadmill and a weight machine, so I have plenty of chances tow ork out. I also try to play basketball with a local group of friends a couple of times a month. We usually play for 3-4 hour stretches.

Poker is fun, but even at the tables, I've gotten up and taken a bathroom break, went to grab food, almost any excus eI could think of to just get away from the table for a few minutes and get the blood flowing again.

I have actually started playing hockey again, in an 25 yr old + recreation league, and one semi competitive over 18 league, very good at keeping someone in shape, I usually have 2 or 3 games a week, and I am a hockey goalie, so wearing the extra 25 pounds of gear for 90 minutes each game is very helpful. I am going to get into a new competitive league this fall that will be a step up from the one I play now, so 3 leagues, 3-4 days a week for about 90 minutes at a time... yea, in shape for the first time since 2000!

I've found this to be an extremely difficult thing to balance personally. Some people have no issues with it, I on the other hand do. I think it has alot to do with a person as an individual. I've been playing full time for almost 5 years now and have issues w/ upkeeping a "healthy living". Mostly I'll play till I'm burnt out and then take a long period of time off (usually 1 to 2 months) and then go back to the tables. I'm mainly a live game player but do get my fair share of hours online. I gotta give props to the people who play poker full time and have a family, I couldnt picture having a family involved with my lifestyle of living. I guess it's all about taking the initiative to force yourself to have a healthy and balanced living while playing poker full time. I have yet to truly reach that yet. I suppose I'll find it one day.
