negative FT rakeback for May

Yes that's right, I have a small negative rakeback on FullTilt for the month of May. Am I disappointed? - No.

FullTilt collected about $350. in rake from me in May. I received bonuses and freeroll buy-ins that totalled more than the $350. in rake. I had very good results from the freerolls and finished very positive in $ through May.

May was an unusual month for me and I don't anticipate many other months that FullTilt will "pay me" to play on their site.

I look at the negative rakeback the same as paying taxes versus receiving a refund in April/May of each year. - If you get a refund it is simply a return of your own "overpayment" that you have made over the year. If you have taxes owing, you owed them all year anyway and it's time to settle up. - although in this case I understand the negative just carries forward to next month.

I guess my whole point is it still makes sense to take advantage of any freebies the sites offer even if it reduces your rakeback.

You got it right. Rakeback is paid our of the profit that the poker room makes out of you by charging rake. If Full Tilt pays you more in bonuses and added money than you pay rake, the you have incurred a loss to them.
