So when you have a home game how to do work things out so that you don't go broke just having everyone over?
So when you have a home game how to do work things out so that you don't go broke just having everyone over?
For us, its usually just some beer. And of course when your friends bring their money over, you're not going to be broke![]()
Sometimes we try to do dinner too. Every once in a while that is. We try to make it were everyone brings a little something. But seems like who ever host the game ends up out a little more that the rest.
Doing pot-luck type of deal for food seems reasonable. Everyone chips in so to say.
The poker players that I do know, have a good taste in food.
Then again, being a good host does necessitate a few inconveniences.
Pot-luck style sounds like a good idea. Might try that and just charge 3 or 4 bucks. See how it goes.
I like cooking as much as poker and I really enjoy putting snacks together for friends when they come over.
I usually try to do eat-with-fingers, non-messy snacks for these nights.
I haven't yet done pot luck or anything like that but that's just because doing the food is fun for me.
Pot luck sounds interesting. Usually it is the standard party food of beer and chips. I really don't care what they bring as long as they bring the money. I know I am such a good friend. Just kidding.
Finger foods are always a good choice. It saves you from doing any major cleanup afterwards. I am all for something simple and easy. You could always have them bring something with them.
poker nights require poker food - food that you can eat with your hands and that won't get all over the cards. Make it a finger food pot luck. And make sure someone brings something sweet!
What to bring is a very good question. When we have a poker game, we usually make a list of who will bring what. It is good so that way we will have everything we need as far as snacks and stuff. The most important is beer. Anyone can bring that. There is never too much beer!! So if you come to my poker party, bring beer.
I like to bring beers to a home game and some snacks. Its great with a few freinds just drinking and having fun. Hoping your friend is more wasted then you, so you can win his money. Pizza is also good to have at a poker game. Winning always makes me hungry. Having food, beer and your friends around is the best thing ever.
Well I used to have a group of friends (about 35) from NewZealand, Australia and South Africa and groups of them lived in 4 homes and every weekend one of the groups would throw a party at a different house. One way they didn't go broke was to do pot luck and also have a "minimum" pay bar. In this way if you had some "real drinkers" you didn't go broke. The money earned from one weekend paid for the "drinks" for the next weekend it was your turn.

Well, that's a good suggestion. Never would have thought of doing that. Here in Canada if you go to a casino you have to "buy" your drinks. It's not like in the US where they supply your drinks as long as you are gambling. The only drinks we get free are water and coffee. So everyone here is used to a "pay" bar and doing it in home games for "minimum" amounts would help everyone not to go broke.
I would think the casinos are missing something. A sober player is not usually as generous as one who has had a few drinks. The alcohol tends to make you much more brave.
As to what to bring to a home game. Let the game rotate homes and the host do the food or let there be a percentage of the pot that goes toward the refreshments.
I perfer to be at home playing in my own domain makes me feel more in control wheather I am or not.
I love to entertain, so hosting is not an issue for me. But if we do go elsewhere, I'm conscious of the whole clean hands issue. You might try foods that you can eat with a tooth pick.
What me and my friends do is just play cards and eat and drink w/e is in the house and just have fun.
yeah, we dont sweat it too much at our games, one guy maybe brings some chips, another guy maybe brings some beer, if everyone decides theyre hungry, we all chip in and order some pizza and were good..
No ordering pizza where I live. If you want it, you better bring it with you. Besides, cold pizza is better with beer anyway!
