TOURNEY: Good plays vs. Bad plays

Heres a tough question to answer!!!

Is the better TOURNAMENT poker player,

-the one who maes the LEAST mistakes

OR

-the one who makes the MOST good plays

???

Id like to hear opinions on this question, because when i play tourneys my main goal is to make the least mistakes possible because sure, winning ONE hand is good, but having ONE mistake can cost you your tourney.

Please if at all possible, can we put a POLL for this question!

The one who makes the least mistakes. One mistake can easily cripple you, if not end the your tournament.

ofcourse the least mistakes you make the better you will do, but the more you can maximize on the hands you hit ("better plays"), basically play extremely selective and aggressive, that way you are playing the odds and maximizing on them.

im gonna say the one who makes more better plays..
for 1 cause no one said it hah
and 2 the more hands you win the more chips you have, so you can lose a few hands and still be iight and know youll come back fomr the lose quick....

How about this, you make 5 good plays early in the tournament, and now you have 4000 chips... then later on in the tournament with high blinds, you raise QJ(s) under the gun cause you feel like you have a lot of chips(power)... and get called by QK, and end up moving all in outkicked?? that's 5 good plays, one mistake!

its easy to say the person who makes the best moves in a tourney is the better player. But my feeling is the less mistakes u make the better you will do. everyone can make great moves in every tourney you play, but also unless this is just me, every tournament i play i play one hand that after i just think to myself man that was dumb why didnt i just muck that pre flop. or WHY DID I TRY TO STEAL THAT POT. so deff the one who makes less mistakes

Yes, with the large amount of tourneys that i have played after i asked this questions, it is VERY CLEAR that the player who makes the least mistakes is NOT ONLY BETTER but will also MAKE IT FURTHER in every tourney. You cant lose by making 15 good plays, but you can definatly lose by making ONE bad play.

I agree! I definitely think it's least mistakes...

hey another question.. is it just me? or do other people also notice that if you make the right moves then the right things happen? like "poker rewards the aggressor.." now, in online poker, i notice if i move all in with AK, i will hit, rather than if i call somebody else's allin with AK i won't hit.. Does anybody else notice that??

While playing mistake-free poker is always something we should strive for. My opinion is that playing with that goal in mind leads to too tight a game. A game in which you are rarely stealing/bluffing, laying down hands in which you may/probably have best hand, etc.

So what if you're too tight? You can't sit around waiting for AA KK QQ AK AQ. Playing only the group 1 of hands and being so tight may be mistake free and allow you to last longer in the tourney but it's my opinion that you won't accumulate enough chips to get really deep once the antes/blinds become rather large.

I guess it comes down to what you mean by mistake free poker.

Please Define bad play and good play?

Raising All in and getting a Call is a GOOD play but it can be bad if you get sucked out on.

Raising with 63o is a very bad play but you could get them to fold or flop 245 and have the nuts. and it would be good then.

There is no GOOD and BAD play in poker, who makes the most sound and math-centered play possible. Cuz all good can go bad and all bad can go good!

This post, has stirred good poker debate. If you make no mistakes you can lose. If you make nothing but good plays you can lose. A good play can be a mistake, but a mistake can not be a good play.


You have to weigh all factors when making a poker decision and all will make mistakes. The ones with the least mistakes and most good plays will prosper in the long run.
