OMAHA Tournaments

last night i played my first ever OMAHA MTT on FullTilt poker, approx 180 players 24+2 buy-in. now during the first 5 hands i managed to gather 12k chips (starting stack 3k) and all this happened through hands i would consider sub standard for omaha (i don't know much about omaha though) my question though is. are people playing in omaha tournaments mainly Hold'em players who can't look beyond their top pair? or was i just insanely lucky? i ended up getting in the money and getting my money in a pot where someone called my 60% draw down with top pair and i missed. my question is how normal is this for omaha?

I would say that it is unusual but it sounds like you know more about Ohama than you are giving yourself credit for.

Yeah buddy, one donkament of course is no standard to gauge from, but overall I find that my roi is way higher in games like omaha/horse because most players are one trick pony's who go through the rythms in holdem and dont have much a clue in more "advanced" or lesser played games. They will go broke with aces with nothing else in multiway pots, etc..... If you really want a big edge, learn omaha hi/lo (PL). You can get weak players all in drawing to half the pot all day. Really is amazing. Just the other day i was in same situation is u a 200 player tounrey was pl omaha hi, get to final table with average stack, monster blinds, i get a guy reraisin my reraise pre with k1044 rainbow and we get it all in. of course my aaqq double suited was no match, but you gotta love the chance. I'm just now really discovering how bad those games are because ive never really liked hi/lo but played alot of omaha.

I play PLO cash games and tried a couple of PLO mtt's. I wasn't able to get a good feel for the tournaments because with blinds, in the mid stage of a tournament, when you bet the pot preflop, then lead out with a continuation bet you've become committed to the hand because the pot is so big (especially if there's more than 1 caller). Now imagine someone outdraws you or your draw doesn't get there, you're either crippled or you got it all in. gg

Now why doesn't this happen in NLHE? Because you don't have such strong drawing hands in NLHE so alot of hands don't get shown down and are won with a simple cbet on the flop.

I see a lot of players who tend to play omaha like it's holdem which is a mistake , omaha is very much a drawing game , people tend to over play top pair a lot , the biggest mistake I see is people who think hitting the nuts on the flop is all there is to it , the nuts on the flop may very well not be the nuts on the river depending on the draw and board lol , anyway omaha is a good way to get some vey nice pots built , even more so in omaha hilo lol , gl

Never gotten into playing Hi-Lo omaha.

I've played a few tournaments and id pretty well in them. (one first place and one on 12th or so. On the money anyways.) I still like the ring game version better for the exactly same reason as infinii described earlier. Too big blinds kill your tournament unless u get to be the vastly bigger stack compared to the others in the table. And THAT needs alot of luck and a hot streak.
