Hi I kind of feel bad because everytime I'm on here I'm always rushing and don't have much time to really sit and read everything. This is my first time posting a thread of my own, so lady is here over my shoulder helping me hahaha so sad to need help with something so simple hahaha

Anyway, I don't play a whole lot because I don't have a whole lot of free time but I do watch Erica sometimes - oops I meant to say lady hahaha now you know her real name oh well she says it doesn't matter hahaha.

Anyway when I watch her I notice one thing I am doing wrong when I play. I notice I play way too many "gappers" as she calls it. Like I like hands like 9 7 or 10 Q and stuff like that but I notice she does not play these kinds of hands as much as I do, but she seems to do a lot better than me too.

So anyway since I have a minute to sit here and actually do this, she said instead of asking her I should ask and get your all's opinions. She says I need to get to know all of y'all, so any friends of hers is friends of mine. So I would be happy to hear your opinions on how I can play better.

Good job, hun. I look forward to reading everyone's replies. Hopefull everybody can give some good advice to my partner here She's a sweetheart, so please don't be too harsh. She's still in the learning process, so any advice or tips would be great. I'm going to step out of this one and let everyone else contribute to this because I have plenty of time here at home to help, but she needs other opinions and options as well. (Plus I'm trying to get her to not be so shy about posting here LOL)

Well TNL, I think you are in pretty good hands there, Lady is a good player. I guess my suggestion is to take some time away from the tables to get your reading and understanding done, Super System (2), Theory of Poker, and for me Holdem for Advanced Players was a good third. (holdem for advanced players focuses more on limit cash games, the Harrington on Holdem are great Tourney books for the 3rd book+)

Next I suppose is just to keep talking to each other about hands, a different perspective is a great source of information. I think you two have quite a good deal there being friends and interested in poker, you could probably get very good in a much shorter amount of time.

Of course the board will always welcome your questions and ideas too, so dont forget us if you think of something interesting.

Depending on how quick you want to improve I would recommend a poker training site. They can be quite costly but i believe that pokersavvyplus has a free 7 day trial you could use and also real poker training, stox poker and a few others allow you to join for 6 months free if you deposit to certain sites. I cant tell you how quickly i improved from watchin videos at cardrunners and the level of instructors they have there now is second to none. So if you are willing to invest a little bit to reap good rewards i would definitly say a poker training site is the way go.

If you are planning on going the budget route i would join as many forums as possible, read up on hands that have been posted ask questions you have and also of course get some hands in. You can't beat just actually playing poker!

Thank you for the information I will definitely check out the books. Lady says since I'm not very good with the computer stuff the books are probably the way to go for me.

While you are still going through the learning process, I'd say pretty much what there has been said before. If you are looking to go into NL hold 'em, I strongly recommend reading Phil Gordon's Little Green book. Take whatever you choose to read to heart, sit down to play, and be patient. The best way to learn is to play, it'll definetely take some time to become a good player, but with some work you'll definetely get there. Besides, you got a good player "looking over your shoulder", so you're good to go.

Oh, and don't go calling too many pre-flop bets with suited gappers.

St. Ever, about the poker training sites, I am a decent player, I am not a losing player anymore, do you think that a poker training site could even help the experienced players game? That might be something I want to look into.

Well TNL you have a tremendous resource available to you, Lady. Sitting while she plays discussing the game will help both of your games, plus it is more quality time together. My wife and I disect the other players and gameplay as it is going, we are constantly teaching and learning from each other with little or no effort.

You may find yourself with the problem in our house, we both fight over who is at the controls of the game...........sharing in the end of course

Keep playing and learning, there is always more poker instinct and skills to develop.

Wanted to add a comment on your statement about gappers. The key is not to avoid them, but play them sparingly, as you would with connectors. Suited connectors are overrated, a one gap hand is not too much worse than the connectors. The straight is the optimal hand you want when playing these types of hands. Unless you have high connectors or gappers, top pair on the flop will present kicker problems. The flush play could also run into kicker problems (more rare) with connectors/gappers.

Play these hands on occasion (with reads, gut feelings, position, ...), but play them carefully, they are the type of hands you win and lose big pots with.

Thanks to everyone who has posted here for TNL. I am glad to see good advice and good options that I may not have thought of. She's still not playing very much online. I think she is more comfortable in the live scenario. She's getting really good at picking up on tells live, so I'm thinking she may just be more of a live player after all. I've sat with her and watched her play online and didn't speak up until she asked a question, and she just seemed too far out of her element online. I guess it's true...online isn't for everyone. But she still tries, so perhaps one day she will find her comfort zone. Thanks again to everybody. *big hugs*

I just want to say thank you to everybody who posted things for me here. I copy and pasted all this and put it onto Word so I can print and save and go over it some when I have more time. I agree Lady is very good she has got us out of some rough spots just from playing poker so I am glad to say she is great in my eyes.


I am glad of the post about the "gappers" by Vito_Nuccio because I was not for sure about them as I said I have been playing them too much I think because it has costed me money a lot of times. But I will keep working on getting all my quirks figured out. I have a little note pad I keep and I write down where I mess up and try to not do it again. Lady says there is a history thing so I don't have to do that but I still do it just to make myself feel better hahaha.


And yeah I am still not very comfortable wtih the online thing but I guess maybe just because it is so different than what I am used to. I have only played online off and on for the past months since November or so...when ever it was that I played on Lady's account but it was off and on. And then more recently when she got her laptop after she sold her old one but I think maybe I might stick to real life games, I'm not sure just yet she says she supports me what ever I choose so that is always nice to know.

Vito is the man. I am also not a fan of connectors, nevermind gappers.

High suited connectors may be worth a call if there are many people in the pot.

Check out books on poker by Sklansky and Harrington. Worth the read. You can probably find them on eBay.
