While you are still going through the learning process, I'd say pretty much what there has been said before. If you are looking to go into NL hold 'em, I strongly recommend reading Phil Gordon's Little Green book. Take whatever you choose to read to heart, sit down to play, and be patient. The best way to learn is to play, it'll definetely take some time to become a good player, but with some work you'll definetely get there. Besides, you got a good player "looking over your shoulder", so you're good to go. 
Oh, and don't go calling too many pre-flop bets with suited gappers.
Limit poker is a science, but no-limit is an art. In limit you are shooting at a target. In no-limit, the target comes alive and shoots back at you.
