Cash Game, Sit-n-Go or Tournament?

So you have created a Rakeback referred account at a poker room and are ready for the action. What games do you play? Do you run to the nearest cash table, join a tourney or try a single or multi table sit-n-go?

Try them all and see what fits your needs and playing style. Most cardrooms offer a variety of games with many buy-in levels. You will find No-Limit, Pot-Limit, Limit, short stack (less starting chips), deep stack (more starting chips), turbo (avoid), super turbo (really avoid), bounty, freezeout, and many other variations of games.


Cash Games: Blinds are stagnant, never changing. You should sit down with 75-100 times the big blind amount. You will play at the same table until you decide to leave. There is no limit to the amount you can win or lose. If you are losing, you can re-buy at any time as long as you are not involved in a hand. Caution must be taken when playing cash games, do not buy into a cash game for a large percentage of your total account amount. You can and will be involved in a big hand eventually, some will be won, others will be lost. Be aware in a cash game, the money on the table is in play and vulnerable.

Sit-n-Go: These tourneys have a fixed number of players and start when all the spots are filled. It can be one table up to as many as the cardroom desires. Single table offers the best chance to cash since usually top 3 are paid out of 9 or 10.

Tournaments: These start at a particular time regardless of how many players are registered. Some poker rooms have an upper or lower limit to number of players for a tourney. The payouts for the top spots based on entrants is very nice in the larger player tourneys. A small buy-in can result in a big payday. As with sit-n-gos, you only have the initial buy-in at risk, you can lose no more, all you can do is bust out and be eliminated or finish somewhere within the prize positions.


Try the options available at your cardroom. There may be an area you excell in not previously known. Watch your overall bankroll when playing any poker. Assure you have plenty of reserves. Do not play at a level that can demolish your account.

I usually play all three at any given time but mostly I play cash games.

The funny thing is that in the SNGs, I do better at PokerStars than at FullTilt. I'm not sure why. Different types of players perhaps?

MTTs are the same thing. I do much better in the MTTs at Pokerstars than at FullTilt.

Cash games are about the same.

get in the game and play to win regardless the type of game you play.
get the right amount of money in when you do bet/call/raise.
get down to heads up and get the cards to win.

bluffing only works when your instinct is in focus.

I think what you say about the players at Full Tilt and Poker Stars Sitngos is the difference in your results-I think the players at PokerStars are generally looser.

IMO, Sitngos favor a tight-aggressive approach for consistently winning or placing in the money

I've recently started to try and keep up with the Ironman challenge on FTP. Between that and trying to drive my rakeback numbers, cash games have been the way to go for me.
