it is also to allow all nine players to get sponsership and other endorsments, rather than waiting for a winner, online sites like full tilt and ultimate bet are willing to pay 10 - 20 million to have a main event champ from their site.

Watched an interview with Daniel Negreanu a while back and he explained its maily to keep it interesting for the TV viewers. Previous years the champion was on all poker magazines covers and websites and many people wouldnt bother watching if they knew what happened. He and the other pro's were sort of frustrated with this decision mainly cause it gives the amateurs an edge. Time to improve (hire coaches) and study pro's style of play, where the actual "pro's" can't really find out anything about the newcomers that made the final table.
