Daniel Negaru is better than Phil Hellmuth. Heck even Phil IVEY is a better Phil. Hellmuth just been in the game too long!
I just won $50 from you, that you could have used, to buy food, but you can't now!

But how can you quantify that. Hellmuth (in NLHE tourneys) just dominates. He makes incredible lay-downs, shows great control. Has 11 WSOP bracelets.

I hate to point out the obvious but anybody who has great control wouldn't be nicknamed poker brat....

I think in No Limit Holdem Tournaments he has to be considered the best, he has more holdem bracelets than anyone. In cash games and other poker games... I dont think so.

I think Ivey just has too much money, we wont see him cracking hellmuth's nlhe bracelet record, he gets bored too easily.

Hellmuth only has more bracelets because he has been playing over 20 years. Given the same amount of time, others will surpass him easily. He isn't the greatest, he is good though.

Well, they do say that Hellmuth is great against average players but average against great players, so go figure. Then again, he does have the most bracelets. Then again, all his bracelets are from hold 'em... Then again...

But no, I don't consider him being the best, with or without the bracelets. He won the main tournament in 1989, and since then, he started winning more bracelets back in 1992, so he has been around for a loooong time already. For example Ivey has won so far 5 bracelets in 8 years, and Allen cunningham has won 5 bracelets in 7 years. I don't know about Negreanu, maybe I would put him ahead of the Poker brat as well, but definetely Ivey and Cunningham I would personally rank higher.
Limit poker is a science, but no-limit is an art. In limit you are shooting at a target. In no-limit, the target comes alive and shoots back at you.

stu ungar is and would have been the greatest poker to ever live, with his geneousness, and reading ability, nobody would have stopped him

    just read about him

ps. he is a 3 time main event winner, and back to back champion

    Default this years best

the best poker player varies from year to year.
this year has got to be erik lindgren.
    watch him!

PH is the best at talking about being the best.
(besides me, since I think I am the best).

the best player is the one who can get chips off others. get the cards and play the cards.
we can win with crap with the right bet. we can lose with the 'next to nutz'.

I know NO ONE that wins all the time.

    play to win!

phil is obviously a champion of poker. but i go by who i've seen the most and that would be daniel and i'm also very fond of gus. doyle is the legend. erick lingren can be mentioned. but the best to me would be daniel and gus, the two excellent charismatic players. and there are many more that i like. but when this question is asked, and it always is i never choose phil as #1. but i like him also.

Phil Hellmuth makes me want to throw up all over the felt. Yes, he's won 11 bracelets, but poker is not about winning bracelets. The luck factor is 100x more important in tournaments than in cash games. Quoting the legendary cash game player Barry Greenstein, "Final table poker is not real poker". Phil is a complete tight @$$ when he plays and I can quote him saying, "I don't know how I get any action". When he doesn't have a bunch of amateurs to reel in and actually plays in a high stakes cash game, he gets completely owned. Hellmuth is the biggest poker sell out, wanna be celebrity on Milwaukee BEAST cans that I've ever seen. He is ruining poker by making everyone think its all about winning *gasp* you're first bracelet. Poker is about making money, not winning a piece of jewelry on a coin flip at a final table that was delayed for 3 months to increase ESPN ratings. I'm sick of that sell out, staged car crashing cry baby and I hope he never again cashes in a single tournament.

Hey, if I ever become a professional player, you better believe that I will be interested in getting a bracelet, of course the money would be more of a non issue at that point, after being able to afford to play cards for a living the next step would be winning some significant tournament or something just to say that I did.

Ok. But I forgot, what does Barry Greenstein do again? I wonder how he got that nickname 'The Robbin Hood of Poker'... Oh yeah, thats right, because he helps the poor by donating ALL of his WINNINGS to CHARITY'S! Not all poker players are snobby and rich beyond belief.

All poker players had to start out somewhere, right? Not everyone (I say that because there are a few people who were born rich and had loads on money to both learn and gamble with) was born a winning player. Most, if not, all of the pro's were first people who were barley learning this new game, not knowing the possibilities it could hold. Then, they found out, they got good, and not it's all on how good they are, or how lucky they have gotten to think they are good. (I'm not saying any names here... *cough* Phil Hellmuth *cough*... )

Bty, I like to call Phil Hellmuth 'The Luckiest Donk'. And you can quote me saying that about him at the felt.

I agree with Buildmo. Good post by the way!

Erik Lindgren is a great player and has done quite well this year.

Phil Ivey and Phil Hellmuth are overrated, IMO.
