From what I understand (and I could be wrong at this): Anything under 100NL (HU that is), the Rake eats you alive. It is best to stay at 6max until 50NL and slowly transition into HU between 50NL and 100NL.

But this could be different now, I don't play online anymore, I play live only now.
I just won $50 from you, that you could have used, to buy food, but you can't now!

Rake eats you up in this game. Set two goals. 1) Decide how much money you want to win (or lose) and when you get to that point CASH OUT. 2) Set a limit for how many hands you want to play. Once you get to about 75 hands (depending on the action) you'll have already paid close to 5 dollars in rake. If you want to play more hands, I recommend buying into the HU sit n goes and saving yourself a little. The only problem with those is you can't just walk away, it's all or nothing. But that's why you put the money on the table in the first place, because you are prepared to lose it.

As far as the heads up play goes, be prepared to switch up you game. You won't be able to get a whole lot of information on who you're playing, so you have to adapt quickly. Do not Tilt. Heads up matches are a good way to loose a lot of money really fast, so be careful. I was playing on Full Tilt last night, 33 in my pocket, villian and I both had about 200 BB. He raises three BB (pretty normal) and I cold call. Flop 3dKc7h and we end up getting all our chips in. Villian turns over Kd9d and runner runners a flush. I freak out and buy back in for another 200 BB and just wait and wait for a playable hand. I finally see AdJd and get it all in pre flop and he flips over AA. No good, now I'm down about 400 BB. no good no good. Just play your game

    1. I would not cherish advice from a player that shoves allin 200BBs with AJ suited heads up. There is literally no hand he could be against that he is a favorite against unless the other guy is a superdonkey. I nearly cried from laughter when I read that AJs push lol.

    2. Playing $10 NL HU is fine, just only play against players you have a big edge on. Bounce around tables until you find one, you don't always have to play an opponent who is slightly worse than you, or rake will eat you both.

    3. Never set a limit or expectation on how much $ you want to win. If you sit with $10, consider that $10 as spent. Now, simply play your best poker and ignore all $ considerations. Also, since you are new to poker, make decisions based on BBs and not $. If a player raises to $.30, he is raising to 3BBs. This way as you improve and move up levels, you will understand the game in terms of BBs and not $, which is crucial to success and makes level adjustments seamless.

    Default My HU play tip

I'd recommend observing the tables you're planning on joining and watching your potential opponents for about a week taking lots of notes before you sit down. You'll need that long to see enough hole cards to get a read on their style. I observe ring games all the time and take notes, especially before I sit down. If you only figure out four (4) players out of 9, you're giving youself a big advantage. If you can figure out your HU opponent by observing, you're way, way ahead. When I play live, it tends to take about 2 hours before I get a read on each player.

I dont play HU directly, only when I make the final two at a final table. HU is less about poker (choice of hands, raising, re-raising, post-flop bets, etc). and more about playing the other player, and of course hoping for that one perfect hand / flop combination to win big. If you stack a player, I'd stop as you'll only give some back.

Last Sunday morning I watched Tom 'durrr' Dwan playing HU at FTP and drop about $50k in an hour. I'm like OMG ! Personally I dont like HU, but I see all these pros at HU tables a lot, like Phil Hellmuth, so I guess if you're really good and smart/aggressive, you can do well. But take advantage of observing. Know thy enemy.
If you always stop while you're ahead, you'll never lose.

Thanks for the replys, yes the rake is bad, but when I start recieving rakeback again at UB it should be ok IMO.

FYI I am not new to poker, just new to HU cash, I have been a FR and 6 max fish previously!
