Default Have you funded your poker bankroll with loan money?

Have you ever taken a loan from a bank or friend etc to play poker? Let's say credit cards do not count in this poll, and neither do quick loans to pay a tournament entry at a casino. I'm talking about funding your bankroll with a loan.

After watching people in live card rooms for over 20 yrs, I see them doing two extremes when they borrow money for bankroll/backing. They either start playing really tight/scared because it is case money... or they play like a berzerko because the don't feel it is "their money" they are losing... and in some cases have the attitude that if they lose, I don't have to pay it back...

It's a losing propostion in my opinion... for both parties...

I don't think I would do this. Too much risk. I think if you don't have the money in hand, you shouldn't gamble with it.

Of course, the same might be said for those buying stocks on the margin.......

If someone is gonna go to the extreme of borrowing money to gamble, they got a real problem IMO and need to consider their, for lack of a better word, habit.

This is true. I would not do this; I only gamble with "play money" which I have budgeted for that purpose.

I personally dont care to share my winnings with anyone. Only acceptable reasons to "borrow" money is either for hedging purposes or leverage.

    Poker Tip:
Never lend money to a gambler or crack head.

I would never take a loan for gambling .On the other hand Every time we go to the live pokerooms I always swap a $50 dollar bill with a buddy for luck.

Everyone knows $50 bills are bad luck.

Maybe 50 euros is good luck?

I think that there are very few good reasons to borrow money to gamble. I make sure that any money that I gamble with is budgeted and if i lose it it will not cause a financial strain on my household.

If you have to borrow money to gamble then you probably shouldn't be gambling.

I checked no... but it's more complicated than that. There was a time when I "borrowed" from a church collection plate in order to bankroll myself into a game. Granted, I was on a missions trip I had no interest in being on... and I was broke and needed money for food. I wouldn't have even used the money for poker but it wasn't enough to live on for the next week or so until we left. Thankfully, church people are notoriously weak at cards and I made enough money to eat until we left. I left with that money in my pocket... so it wasn't borrowing... it was stealing.

That was a long time ago, back when I was a teen. And it hasn't happened since.

I do not, as a habit, borrow money to play. If I don't have money then I can't play. I never play with more than I feel comfortable losing. And I am not comfortable owing people money. So borrowed money is too high stakes for me.

I do loan money to certain people. But it's a flat out loan. If they lose it, they still are responsible for paying it back. My brother is probably the worst example of my ease at loaning out my money. In about 3 months I have loaned him almost $300... basically my entire online bankroll. It's only been frustrating recently because I have 1 full-buy in left for my normal cash game and I don't want to risk losing it. So I am playing with play money until he send me money back. He is good for it... I just don't know how long it will take.

It's not a good idea to loan money to people for poker. If they are good enough to make it a sound bet that you'd get your money back right away.... they wouldn't be borrowing money.

I have never taken a loan from a bank, nor would i ever. One time my buddy and i were playing on FT, i had a really badbeat at a $2/4 table, i went from $170 down to $28. He was at another table but we were watching each other play, next thing i know he says check your account. WHAT? I checked and he had transfered $100 to me, i said thnx and we went about our business, an hr later i was up to $280, he and i have been friends for 20+yrs, he knew i would give it back, and i did that same day.
