Default Bad Play on my part?

OK guys this hand should generate a lot of opinions.. It was a 9 dollar turbo on stars and only final table gets money.. I ended up getting 4th for little over 800 but should have at least got 3rd for 1200..

I am pretty upset about how the hand went down and mostly becaue i played it horrible and scared hoping to get 3rd place.. Button moves in and small blind calls as well as me in big blind.. Guy moves all in at the blanket on the turn and i folded thinking he had to have AQ , set, or KQ.. I always thought you were supposed to check it down to try and knock other guy out and only bet if u have strong hand.... Anyways here is the hand..

What turbo only awards the final table money for $9 and has that big of a payout?

The only one who didn't play it badly is the button. Why did you check the flop? Unless you wanted to give the small blind a chance to catch and beat you? If he had AQ or KQ already, he was likely going to beat the button hand as well, so you'd still finish in third.

The small blind's push is so funny I can't believe it actually happened.

Ya i should have moved in on flop no doubt but for some reason i always assumed your supposd to check it down unless u have a monster. After the hand he kept saying how sorry he was for the all in.. LoL anyways next hand i get 66 move in on bb and he as A6 and hits the ace.
I cost myself at least 3rd place probaly 2nd by not betting flop,

Checking it down is good if you're just wanting to knock out the button, but the odds of you winning the pot decrease significantly. If you're going for 1st, you want to be heads up against the button all in with top pair on the flop. If you were playing to move up a spot, checking down is definitely the right move.

YA the more i think about it the more it makes me sik to my stomach.. My mindset was pretty much on locking up 3rd to make extra 400 ... should have focused on winning 1st

this fold probably one of worst in tourney history lol.. Just so hard to not get caught up in the emotion while your playing.. Lesson learnt

    bet the flop!

that stupid convention that you're supposed to 'check it down' is so misunderstood - the reason for checking it down is when you both have nothing and there's no side pot, so bluffing accomplishes nothing except giving the AI guy a better chance at winning. you're allowed to bet when you've hit! you need to protect your hand. also if he had AQ he probably would have shoved over the top to isolate.

basically don't worry about all this checking it down crap unless it's a satellite bubble or something. makes me laugh when people start checking it down in the middle of a tourney because 'we're supposed to work together to knock someone out!'.

poker is a war! treat it as such.
