    Default Bad Beat Jackpot EV

A dealer in AC told me for a live bad beat jackpot (payed out when quad 2s get beat by a better hand etc.) to have positive EV, it has to be over $220,000 if its shared by 1 table, 50% to the loser, 25% to the winner, and 25% split between the rest at the table. I was wondering if anyone could calculate when the bad beat jackpot begins to have positive EV on AbsolutePoker.com. It hits when quad 8s get busted by a better hand, and gets shared by everyone playing at each table at that same level.

I think it would depend what table the jackpot was hit at. I've been on the tables twice when it was hit at the .25/.50 and got like $100 when the JP was over 300k because there are so many people playing that level. When it gets hit at the 2/4 level the people playing at those levels probably get a much bigger chunk since there are a lot less players on those tables.

And if the JP gets hit and the last hand you were playing didn't have enough $ in the pot for AP to take the .50, you don't get jackshiit.

I checked on another site for you. They are competition to this site, so I wont mention their name. They claim it must be $300-400,000 to be +EV. The number varies depending on the table level, limit or NL, and Full ring or 6-max.

In the end it's still a lottery whether it's +EV or not.

i've always thought of it as neutral EV. personally, i don't like it. your chances of hitting it are negligible. but it adds up pretty quick against your ROI.

The amount any poker site pays out in a bad beat jackpot is chump change compared to the amount they make in rake everyday so it doesn't really matter if and when it hits because it is so rare... they surely make way more from people playing trying to get the bad beat jackpot than the amount they eventually will pay out.

It doesn't cost the site anything to put in a bad beat jackpot, except if they put money in the pool to start it off. All the money that goes in is taken in addition to the normal rake. When it hits, a percent is left behind to keep it going.

Which means you are paying an additional rake on top of what you normally pay. In the end, I feel like if you play at bad beat jackpot tables, you lose some EV. Obviously there are some times where an additional $0.50 a hand (standard for online games) is worth the jackpot because it's so large, but the odds are just so large that it's not realistic to expect to see that EV "even out." A more extreme case of this is powerball... while technically it can be +EV to play, realistically, you are almost guarenteed to run below EV. You *might* get really lucky, and then you'll be running insanely above EV, but the majority of people will run below EV in these situations.

Do the micros still take out the same Bad Beat Jackpot rake as the medium or high stakes Bad Beat tables? Because I always find Bad Beat games to be very juicy and more profitable than regular cash games, despite the extra rake. However, if it's the same rake in all the stakes, obv it wouldn't be worthwhile playing the micros. The extra 50 cents at a nl200+ game isn't significant compared to all the extra action you are getting. 50 cents at a nl10 table would be huge, though.
    Think for yourself. Question authority.

When I played at UB, it was that way.

I just pulled up their site rules to see if it were still that way.

How Do Bad Beat Jackpots Work?

We've created tables where, if you lose with quad Eights or better you'll take home a hefty cut of the Bad Beat Jackpot. This jackpot grows with every hand that's dealt at all of our Bad Beat tables. We collect $0.50 from the pot of each raked hand that is raked $0.25 or more. The $0.50 is then added to the Jackpot until one (un)lucky player loses to a hand that shouldn't have gotten where it did.
So yeah, $0.50 in rake no matter what stakes. However, I don't think the bad beat jackpot tables exist until $50NL.
