    Default newb here, basic questions

I've been trying to understand the poker "language" used here to make sense of what people are talking about. I'd really appreciate your help. I know I have a lot to learn.

I understand SnG and MTT and Ring games. But what is a deep stack tournament? Does it mean someone who has lots of cheaps and made the final table? Or a tournament with lots of players?

Is there really a different stategy for SnG, MTT and Ring games?

What is 100bb? What is EV?

And lastly, I think I got a pretty good idea but what is "donks and fishes"? Differences?

You can find me under "dummy", lol.

A deep stack tournament is one where everyone starts with a lot of chips relative to the blinds. It is often one with longer than normal levels. For example, in many tournaments you start with 1,500 chips (or 1,000 or 2,000), blinds of 5/10, and 15 minute levels. A deep-stack tournament might start you with 10,000 chips... 5/10 blinds... and 20 minute levels. The main difference is that the stacks are much deeper and the tournament moves a lot slower. This means players can use their skill more and they won't feel much pressure from the blinds for a long time.

It has nothing to do with the number of people who play or the number of chips a player might have at the final table.

Short answer... yes. The best strategy could be very different for all of these depending on blinds and stack sizes... as well as payout structure for tournaments. What is a good move in a cash game would be a horrible move in a tournament on the bubble.

    What is 100bb?
bb="big blind" 100bb is 100 big blinds. This is the typical starting stack for ring games. In a $0.10/$0.25NL game... 100bb would be $25. This is the amount most players start with and is the default maximum buy-in on many sites.

    What is EV?
Expected Value. This is a hard concept to explain in short form. Basically... your EV is the amount you expect to win or lose long term if you play the hand a certain way hundreds and hundreds of times.

And lastly, I think I got a pretty good idea but what is "donks and fishes"? Differences?
That's debatable. For me... I think call the more aggressive players donks and the passive players fish. But they're all the same and it doesn't really matter. All that matter is that they keep playing worse than you are and you don't upset them.
I get no respect. . . when I move all-in, people from other tables call.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm going to read up more about the EV. Great forum. And ...."Chips".

No offence to opening post here but this is one of those really annoying threads. Many of us previously contributed to a poker abbreviations thread but it got lost/never stickied.

Like I said, no offence dhkane, certainly not your fault.
