Lol... I think his comment was funnier than just "I shoved all in" (when the all-in shove would be numerous times the pot) just because it means the bet was actually thought about prior to making it. You just don't bet "3 times the pot" without consciously figuring out what "3 times the pot" would be.

At least he milked you good with a trap, so that part was very good play on the villians part.

    Default Slowplaying

ok, here's a word on slowplaying:

On the flop, you have 2 possible draws, one is a straight draw, one is a flush draw. Mathematically speaking, people will have a hand to fit into these draws about 15% of the time. They will hit the flush or straight 33% of the time and 17% of the time with two cards to come, respectively. That said, it's a pretty go od argument for betting your hand, because even trip jacks on a seemingly innocuous flop is nothing to get excited about. You flopped your set, and it's time to get more money in the pot, while still forcing errors.

Your bet is a little too much (3x the pot). Your hand has become what people like to call transparent. You have a hand that resembles top pair, at least that's what opponents will read you as having. So, if they can't already beat it, or they can easily draw to beat it, they won't bother putting more money in the pot. So, you can't really fault anyone for calling due to the implied odds. If you're willing to put that much money in, you'll be more willing on later streets.

Second, your attitude was spot on. You want to bet to put more money in the pot. You honestly make more money making pot-sized bets on every street than you do checking the flop, and the turn, and betting the river. Some will attest to times where they checked trip aces all the way down and their opponent just shoved and they got a big pay day. Do not fall into this mode of thinking that slowplaying will always work. At most, you'll pick up an extra bet. The fastest way to get money into the pot is by betting. And, people get more suspicious of a check. A bet seems routine, like a c-bet (continuation bet). They either call, raise, or fold. Don't abandon the strategy if they fold...people won't always have a hand to play back at you.

Now, he hit his draw, and that's something you can't avoid. The proper way to play the hand has gone out the window, since you can't possibly put him on that hand. However, you can look and see from his betting if he is trying to trap or not. Nevertheless...you will lose money on this hand. Few people can fold sets, and he may be doing the same thing with a smaller set, AA, KK, or QQ. it's just the way it goes...that's poker.

    Hope this helps, somewhat.
