Maybe not the answer you're looking for, but I doubt poker books help at all (at least that was true for me when I read regular poker books). IMO a "internet poker" book will be a regular book, just w/ the "internet" marketing.
What helps is experience. And also, it's the right experience - i.e not playing turbo/super turbo tournaments, and avoiding regular tournaments in favor of double stacked and slower paced tournaments etc. Also, that's not to say watching poker isn't experience (I'd consider PokerStarsTV, High Stakes Poker, maybe PAD as good. WSOP is just entertainment).
Doyle Brunson has a book specifically for online poker. It came out a few years ago and I have read it and honestly I don't the the advice is very relevant anymore. I also know Scott Fischman has a book called Online Ace. I don't know how good that one is. I think if you read the regular poker books you can apply the same principles to online play
thanks for the answers. i was just wondering had anyone come at it from an online angle, such as multi tabling, reading online tells etc. recently i've been watching my opponents time to bet and making assumptions on what it means.
stuff like that.
i love high stakes poker btw. the quality of play on that show is unreal.
p.s. doyle's book is supposed to be brutal and nothing more than a sales pitch for doyle's room.
On the topic of experience vs. book, in at least 1 in 3 tournaments I play, there's always that one beginner that read Super System and bets the pot every time (not just cbet). It may be a 4 way limped pot, and he'll go ahead and bet the pot when it's his turn to act. It's pretty sad, they break even for every small pot they win from every flop the bet and lose, and once in a while, if the pot's big, they'll throw a big turn bluff, only to get trapped by an opponent who has the nuts. This isn't a generalization of a few instances, this is frequent occurence of beginners reading books like Super System and playing mechanically. I can relate, years ago this is how I played. Poker books can teach you how to play pre flop very well, but they can't substitute what experience can teach you on how to play on/after the flop, which obv is far more important.
I've never have and never will read a poker book. Experience is 100 times more important if you already know the basics. If you hit a road block in your game, go on forums and look at situations you currently struggle with and work on it with the help of others so you logically understand where your leak is. Don't just do something because somebody in a poker book says so.
Think for yourself. Question authority.
trav , economist, i completely agree. however in my job i am a personal trainer, yet i cotinue to read other trainers books and articles. all very repititive so i mostly skim. and nothing teaches me what works like experience with my clients.but you can get one or two new ideas occassionally. there are many ways to learn.boooks are just one of them.not the best way but i'd never rule them out completely.
you are right too econ about the SS GUY. i often encounter guys at micro level cash games who raise EVERY TIME they have the button, no matter what 2/4 cards they're holding. very very easy to exploit.
