Default Bankroll

There are many thoughts on bankroll. How much of your bankroll do you risk when you sign up for a game/tournament (rake included).

Default Monthly Treat

I like to stay disciplined (even when drinking) and play for less than 5% of my total to absorb the down swings. It seems to be a good number because I have not had to worry about buying in for months.

Another note: I give myself a treat monthly when my rakeback is deposited in my account and play some games at a higher level. I may bend the 5% rule a little when I have the extra rake money available. It lets me take a little chance to win more without actually denting my bankroll.

Thanks,

the best answer to this is found here :
LiquidPoker - The bankroll management and variance guide
it brings all the math into it so it helps but the general idea is not using any more than 5% of a bankroll on any one tournament, and 25 buy ins at a specific ring game.
there is a scenerio on that site where you need 100 buy insat a specific ring game, but thats for more of the people who will never go broke ever playing onine, or for a person who is playing for a living. Hope that helps

Default Bankroll

U should defenitely not play in a ring game unless u have 20 buy ins. I set a rule of 40 buy-ins for myself. I play full time for a living. My worst swing was losing 18 buy ins in a week, It took all sorts of sick beats including the worst of em all ( which happened twice) the ole 999 to 1 on flop. runner runner for an underpair to beat my set of aces. Happens all the time if u play enough.. I think single table sng's 20-30 buy ins is safe for a strong player. As far as multitable tournaments, i wouldnt risk more than 2%.

I've never deposited on any poker site; I live and die on winnings from Freerolls. This past year I have been concentrating my poker play, folding more accuratetly, knowing when I'm beat, for instance. I recently won $4 in a fair-sized Freeroll and, as I didn't have to play too well to win this, decided to commit basically all of my winnings in a $3 + $0.30, 90 seater, double stacked turbo knockout SNG. I played excellently throughout, even sat out for a while at the final table due to unforseen circumstances, and finished in a brilliant 2nd place; winning $43.88 for my 2nd place and $0.50 for 9 knockouts. Since then I have been committing >5% of my BR and have been profitting every day since. My current BR is at $348.62

I hope this thread has inspired some of you rakebackers.

Seven T Eleven.

that is pretty awesome seven, i placed 5th in a $10 - 90man sng turbo double stack tourney two days ago. first time I had played one, very fun to weed my way through, although i did donk off at the end with a middle stack, I had a lot of fun.

if it is my cash BR, I currently have to bring 10% to a table on .5/1. I hope to get that to 5% in the next 4 weeks or so. Live I like to keep $4000 at the local $1/2 which a buy in is $300, or 7.5% of my BR.

Tournies, I would say for me I wont risk even 5% of my BR, although an FTOPS event or two have been tempting... I still dont play many tournies, so I like to keep the % I use down.

I haven't played with an adequate bankroll in at least a year. (if adequate is what most people recommend). I play NL100, 4 tables at once, and each month I have $2500 in my account, and at the end of the month I take anything over that out, and start again wiith $2500. So far, I've been fortunate enough not to be in a position where I need to go down a level or deposit more. It works for me, at least.

Yes Fictive does have a nice bankroll, but said he/she said they take out the profit each month and plays with the same 2500. Sounds like good bankroll management and playing to me. If Fictive decided to play 1000 per game, even 2500 shrinks up in a hurry.

I know people who can play on 100 for months (lower, but affordable games of course) and others who would blow through 100 in one night of playing 25-50% of stack per game.

Chris Ferguson (pro) preformed a great experiment a year or two ago. He took nothing, played in freerolls to start and turned it into over 10000 in about 17 months. He used strict rules of bankroll management once some cash was in his account and stuck to those rules. After 7 months he had less than 10 dollars in his account, but kept to the rules and turned it into a monster chip stack. Search out the article, excellent reading about bankroll management.

Thanks,
