Default tipping in a live tourney

so i was lucky enough to take down a 50+10 60 person tourney at a local poker room last nite for 1200. after i won though, i wasnt sure how much to tip so i asked the dealer how much he usually gets and he said he couldnt say. so i asked the host and he said 10% is considered generous. i remember hearing something about 1% a while back on huge tourney wins, but that was for like the wsop or wpt where you are winning millions of dollars. so i ended up tipping 100, but now i looked it up and it seems as though 5% is good enough. so how much would you guys have tipped?

Your tip was generous and fine. Don't worry too much about what other people say to tip and just give what you believe is right. For the huge tournaments, the general percentage rule in place is good because the reward is so much higher than the buy-in that people wouldn't think to tip that much... 4% of 200k is a lot more than most people would think to tip.

There is nothing wrong with giving $100 in your spot. Same with giving $150 or $50... whatever you feel the dealer(s) were worth. A tip is a personal statement from yourself to the person or people who provided service for you. Don't worry about "good enough." When I eat out, I rarely tip exactly 15% unless the service was sub-par... I always look to give a little more.

well heres the deal. so 1st was 1200, 2nd was 600. and when we were heads up, the guy i played was really crazy aggresive and was calling practically every hand. so he just had me covered and raised preflop, i pushed with pocket 2s and he called with K6. the board came K955....2!!! ironically, 2 hands later, i got 2s again and pushed and he called with 96 and the board came AK524 to win me the tourney. so i guess my 100 tip was kinda worth it, cuz if the dealer didnt spike that 2 for me the first time, i woulda had 6 bills less lol.

Default Player Decides

It is up to the individual as to how to tip (toke) dealers after big wins. Any amount is generous as it is your money. When I play live I always toke the dealers. It does not matter if I am in the card room or standing at the craps table.

If a big win comes, I tip some from that, but not 10%. I believe that is a little high especially if the win qualifies for income tax declaration.

There are no rules when it comes to toking in the casino or cardroom. Any toke should be appreciated, not matter how small. The amount is up to you and no one else.

Later,

Nice thread. People generally do not discuss this aspect, or any aspect really, of playing in live poker games.

Good going, Stoff!

Default trust the gut

you probably should tip the dealer...
how much was the house getting?
was the dealer getting paid anyway?
regardless, tip the dealer and it will come back 10 fold.

10% is the norm at the casinos at least.

I used to deal. Tourneys were for the noobs because the tips didnt make up nearly as much as if you were deaing live game for that amount of time. Keep in mind that every dealer in the tourny gets equal share of the tips.

However, a lot of places pay the dealers a portion the buy in fee. This is nice and after tips it makes it worth it.

You should tip what you feel is right, but 5% to 10% or $1,000(whichever is less) would be my standard. My biggest cash was 7500 and I gave $500.

wow thanks for the input guys, i wasnt expecting this much repsonse. as for your questions buildmo, the house made 10 buck on 60 players so 600 bucks in fees. i believe the dealers get paid an hourly rate plus tips. when i dealt at a few rooms, i usually got 15 bucks an hour plus tips, which usually worked out to 25+ an hour which was pretty good. and as a dealer i especially appreciated tips so i returned the favour here.
