Danny 'Brotha D' Leaoasavaii took down his first major poker tournament win on Sunday when he won the Main Event of the Sky City Poker Festival, a part of the PokerStars sponsored Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT). Leaoasavaii bested a field of 218 entrants to take down the NZ$170,000 first place prize.
Leaoasavaii is known as the “Godfather” of New Zealand hip hop. He is co-founder of Dawn Raid Entertainment, a hip-hop record label based in the South Pacific. Brotha D won his entry into the event via a celebrity invitational tournament at the Sky City Casino in Auckland, the second year in a row he has won the event.
Leaoasavaii bested a veritable United Nations of a final table which included three Australians, two New Zealanders, and one each from Hungary, Spain and the United States. Australian Tom Grigg, who qualified online through PokerStars finished 2nd for NZ$107,900 after a four hour heads-up battle.
For the third year in a row the title will stay on native New Zealand soil. Last year Kiwi Simon Watt won the event. Watt won a WSOP bracelet this summer besting Full Tilt Pro Tom Dwan heads-up in Event #11.
The next stop on the APPT will be in Cebu, Philippines at the Shangri-La Mactan Resort & Spa. Qualifiers are running at PokerStars now. Don't have a PokerStars account? Sign up for one right here at Rakeback.com.
