PokerStars continued its series of SuperStar Showdown battles on Sunday, with Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom’s latest challenger - successful tournament player and former WPT winner, Ukranian Eugene Katchalov.
The rules were the same as Blom’s previous matchups. 2,500 hands of NLHE or PLO at $50/$100 on four tables simultaneously. Blom’s record stood at 2-1 going into battle with Katchalov, with his previous two matchups resulting in victories over Tony G. and Daniel Cates.
Each player started with a $10,000 stack on each of the four tables, and took a little over a half hour for the first all-in confrontation. Blom turned trip sixes to best Katchalov’s flopped top pair and took a nearly $12k lead at that point in the match.
The players played small-ball poker through the halfway point in the match when Blom started to wrest chips away from the Ukranian and jumped out to a $43k nearly 1400 hands into the battle.
Katchalov would mount a series of small surges but in the end it was Blom who had the hot hand over the last half of the match. When the dust cleared, Blom stepped away from his computer with $111,750 in winnings, and continued to dominate in the SuperStars Showdown created exclusively for him on PokerStars.
Among the railbirds during the match was none other than Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu, who has been spotted at the high-stakes heads up tables lately. Rumor has it that a matchup between Blom and Negreanu is in the making.
