The Global Poker League (GPL) draft is set for next week on February 25th in Los Angeles, California. Yesterday the new league held a draft lottery to determine the order in which teams will select their players.
The Rome Emperors won the lottery and team manager Max Pescatori (pictured lower right) will select 1st overall.
Early speculation has team managers leaning toward taking players from the team's own region.
The draft is snake-style format, in which the selection process moves 1st through 12th, then back 12th through 1st, and so on.
The draft is now set for 4 rounds. Each team’s roster has been expanded to include 6 players, originally teams were announced to include just 5 players.
There are 203 players in the GPL player pool. Any player in this “pool” is in the Global Poker Index Top 1000 and opted into the league. These players are available to be drafted or named to the team by a wild card selection.
Team managers will have the choice of drafting in all 4 rounds and then adding 2 wild card choices, or managers can draft in just 3 rounds and add 3 wild card choices at a later date.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out as the GPL moves forward, and gains momentum on it's quest to “sportify” poker.
The draft begins at 2 pm PT next Thursday in Los Angeles, California.
