How Rakeback & Bonus Work Together

Both rakeback and bonus will earn your extra cash in their own ways. Bonus can affect rakeback, but the aggregate end result from getting both is always better to you.

Poker bonus is a one-time cash incentive which can be cleared by playing a specified amount within a fixed time frame. Bonus amount usually scales up with deposit size.

Rakeback is a continuous loyalty payment awarding you for playing at one poker room, and is tied to the rake charged from you. Some people talk about getting their “rakeback bonus”, so it could be thought of as a perpetual bonus. [More info on rakeback]

Do Bonuses Decrease My Rakeback?

Usually yes. Since rakeback is commonly paid based on your Net rake contribution to the poker room, it means that a bonus will make your rakeback smaller in that period. However, getting both rakeback and a bonus is still better than no bonus. See example in next section.

If your rakeback is based on Gross rake contribution, then bonuses have no effect on rakeback payment.

Sample Bonus and Rakeback Calculation

Bonuses reduce your rakeback by decreasing your Monthly Gross Revenue (MGR) which is the amount that a poker room receives from your play. Your rakeback amount is also generally based on this MGR amount. So let’s take a look at what a bonus will do to your monthly rakeback amount.

Rakeback without Bonus:

  • You receive 30% rakeback while paying $2500 rake in 1 month
  • Rakeback equals MGR x Rakeback %: $2,500 x 30% = $750

Rakeback with $500 Bonus:

  • You clear a $500 sign-up bonus during the same month where you raked $2500
  • MGR is reduced by the bonus amount: $2,500- $500 (bonus cleared) = $2,000
  • Rakeback equals $2,000 x 30% = $600
  • Total bonus and rakeback is $500 (bonus) + $600 (rakeback) = $1,100

While you ‘lose’ $150 in rakeback, you gain $500 through the bonus meaning you will earn $350 more by taking the bonus with rakeback.

In the simple example above you can see how much you would receive when you first open an account with rakeback at a poker room.

Please note MGR can also be reduced by payment processor fees, poker tournament overlays, and using player points in the loyalty store. You should always verify if using player points reduces your MGR.

Bonus Rakeback

On occasion poker rooms will offer additional rakeback. In early 2013 PKR offered double rakeback of 60% to players. Keep an eye on poker room promotions for special bonuses like this.
