Is Phil Ivey Still One of the Best in the Business?

When it comes to talk of the greatest poker players ever to grace the game, Phil Ivey’s name is always one of the first that comes up.

He is known for his all-around play, and his general consistency in major competitions over the years.

But has he achieved enough to gain the status as one of the all-time legends of poker? And is there a new brand of player emerging that could be considered better than Ivey and his generation?

Ivey Has Long Been Considered the Tiger Woods of Poker

Ivey gained the nickname the Tiger Woods of Poker, thanks to his peers generally regarding him as the paramount all-round player in the world.

On top of being highly adept at the felt, Ivey is a cool customer, which is another trait he shares with the golf legend.

In terms of achievements, there are few players who have been as consistent as Ivey has been over the course of his career. The 44-year-old has made four final tables at the World Series of Poker and earned ten bracelets. He has also had 13 money finishes in the World Poker Tour, and has claimed one title.

The Californian player deserves to be regarded as one of the best players ever, but his achievements don’t quite put him in the top spot. There are a few who have managed to win greater accolades and amass more tournament earnings than Ivey.

A Common Trait of the Greatest Players

On his path to becoming one of the greatest in the business, Ivey may have looked at past legends and replicated some of their techniques in improving at poker. Players like Stu Ungar, for example, could be considered better than Ivey.

Ungar spread his time between a number of different card games, and could have inspired Ivey to do the same. The Kid was renowned for playing gin rummy and blackjack, and this helped him to refine his mathematical skills. This is probably why he managed to win the World Series of Poker Main Event on three separate occasions.

Ivey isn’t really known for playing blackjack on a professional level, but he does have an interest in baccarat which he plays at high roller tables in Macau. Although the games differ greatly in how they are played, they both have a heavy focus on odds and probability. These are useful skills to bring back to the poker table.

Many poker players have followed in the footsteps of Ivey and aimed to improve their overall poker skills by taking up other card games.

A lot of Asian and Indian players may have been influenced by Ivey’s journey, as there are numerous professionals now emerging from the country who play in a similar style to the American.

Those following his path have found that baccarat is readily available to play online across the globe, and Asiabet India can be used to find the best sites to play at, for example. Players can choose based on ratings, along with the various welcome bonuses on offer.

A New Style of Player is Emerging

Some would say that the methods of Ungar and Ivey in playing other traditional card games are now outdated, though.

This is because there is a new style of player emerging who doesn’t have an arsenal of blackjack or baccarat ability under their belt.

These newcomers are rising up from the eSports industry, and are taking what they have learned about strategy to the biggest poker tournaments in the world.

One of the first players to follow this path was Bertrand Grospellier, otherwise known as ElkY.

The 40-year-old had great success at StarCraft: Brood War and Warcraft III before translating his skills to the poker table. The top two players in the all-time money list also entered the world of poker through this channel.

Bryn Kenney and Justin Bonomo both played Magic: The Gathering professionally before becoming legends of the felt. They have since earned just over $56 million and $53 million respectively. Modern players may feel that learning eSports is now a better way to develop the attributes needed for poker.

Ivey may have a bit more to do if he is ever going to be considered as the greatest player of all time.

The modern players coming through could be seen as a threat, as they have developed highly useful skills from eSports. Perhaps Ivey needs to play some competitive games to boost his own talents.

A New Online Poker Boom in 2021

2020 saw a boom in online poker, and that looks to continue in 2021. One of the reasons for the increase in online poker play last year was the pandemic that shut down casinos and live poker events.

However, poker rooms adapted to the new influx of traffic offering many things to players online and one great example is GGPoker hosting the prestigious WSOP online. To say that venture was a success would be an understatement, as the World Series main event shattered the record for guaranteed payouts.

There is also now positive news for online poker in the US as recent developments with the Wire Act could see legal inter-state poker return for American players.

With the increased popularity in poker over the last year the online poker rooms have tried to lure in new players. Because of that, they have offered many new things to attract them, which I good for every player since they have so many choices.

The influx of players online has led to poker sites offering new and more lucrative bonuses, more payment options, and more satellite tournaments where winners can get entry to bigger online events. With all of the new things available to players it looks as of there is no end to the poker boom.

Poker rooms, online casinos, and sportsbooks have always given out bonuses and promotions to players in hopes of getting new ones and keeping existing ones happy. In current times with no lack of reputable and solid online poker rooms players can really cash it in with bonuses and promotions.

With more people playing online and playing for longer it is easier to attain bonuses. Because of this, you can pad your bankroll much quicker will all of the bonuses available.

Another aspect of the new poker boom is that with more players online they can really take advantage of VIP and loyalty programs.

These types of programs reward loyal players and since more people are playing online for a longer period of time they can earn points in a quicker manner to move up in the levels of the programs and get more benefits, such as increased poker rakeback.

Again, with poker popularity continuing to rise it means that the online poker rooms have more traffic. Because of this games can be looser as more amateurs are at the virtual tables, which can be a good thing for more seasoned players.

Also, the more traffic a poker room has the more tables will be available and to go even further a wider variety of stakes. Any time a poker site sees more traffic they can offer more tables for wider stakes, which is beneficial for players since they have a greater choice no matter what their bankroll is.

It remains to be seen if the poker boom will continue, but as it stands now it looks as if there is no slowing down. It is pretty basic to understand, as with the influx of players online the more choices those players have.

While it is, obviously, a boon for the poker rooms with more traffic it is also the same for players, who will have more options to choose from when it comes to games and stakes to bonuses and VIP programs. The future of online poker looks bright, as the networks online with the many poker rooms offer a wider variety of things and benefits to players.

2020 saw a more than solid growth in the online poker industry. The pandemic may have been the catalyst for it but the poker rooms have really taken the ball and ran in terms of offering a solid product to more people that like to play poker online.

Therefore, they have upped their game in what they can offer the everyday player and the professional one alike. No matter what type of player you are, you can be sure that the popularity of the online poker industry will, likely, continue to grow, which is only beneficial to any type of poker player.

Online Rooms Kept the Poker World Running

As the pandemic started, in the early months of 2020, when cities went under lockdowns and people had to comply with social distancing restrictions, many industries took a significant financial hit. But the online poker industry was able to thrive during this period, attracting interest from both lapsed and new players.

With many people spending more time at home, and the lack of entertainment alternatives, online poker rooms were under the spotlight again, as many companies recorded a surge in new accounts and an increase in deposits made to previously inactive accounts.

According to a report by PI Datametrics, the volume of Google searches for online poker in the United Kingdom increased by more than 3,000% in 2020.

But apart from being a refuge for people seeking distraction from the world news, online rooms hosted a number of circuit tournaments and kept the professional poker world running. As a result of most brick-and-mortar poker rooms being closed due to lockdowns, and many tournaments being cancelled, GGPoker held multiple World Series of Poker events and qualifiers, including bracelets and ring events.

With a lot of inexperienced players joining online rooms, and pots increasing exponentially, veteran players were able to make more money than before the pandemic.

A new poker boom

Since the early stages of pandemic lockdowns, poker websites experienced a surge in new accounts and deposits made, and as stated by Paysafe, an online payments company, the average of consumers making deposits with online poker operators rose by 50% between March and April 2020.

In the US states of New Jersey, Nevada, Delaware and Pennsylvania, where online poker sites are legalized, record revenues were reported in the same period.

Operators in New Jersey, for example, netted almost US$4 million in March, which represented a 90.0% increase in comparison with 2019, according to a report by New Jersey division of gaming enforcement.

Even though online poker is not yet legal in the whole country, these US friendly poker sites are currently available for players in different states, and some other states recently passed new legislation that regulated online rooms, therefore are also expected to also make a profit in 2021.

Veteran players are also profiting from this rise in online poker gaming. As the number of players increases, so do pots. In May 2020, GGPoker beat its US$500,000 guarantee pot for the first time, after 3,662 players joined an online tournament.

Earlier in the year, WSOP.com launched the Super Circuit Series, an online event to replace a live tournament that was due to happen in Las Vegas. The prize money rose from US$1.24 million to US$4 million following an unexpected increase in the number of entries.

But bigger pots weren’t the only reason veteran players were benefited by this new boom. Most of these new entries came from inexperienced players or newcomers to online poker, leading to a large aggregation of weaker competition. Therefore, professionals were able to win more money, more often.

Official tournaments

In 2020, major live poker tournaments were mostly cancelled or postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Aside from an event in Sochi with fewer entries than expected, the European Poker Tour cancelled all of their live tournaments. The World Poker Tour, which was recently acquired by Element Partners in a deal worth almost US$80 million, held only five tournaments in the early months of the year before shutting down live operations in March.

Three of its tournaments, which began in last year’s first quarter, had their final tables scheduled to be played in April 2020, but were postponed, and to this date haven’t been played.

Finally, the World Series of Poker, the largest live poker series, shifted their schedule online, with GGPoker hosting most of these tournaments.

The WSOP splitted the start of its main event into two online tournaments held by GGPoker, one in the US and one in Europe. Each competition’s final nine players gathered in person for the final tables.

The European final table was held at King’s Casino in Rozvadov, Czech Republic, finishing with Argentinean Damian Salas as the winner. The US final table was played at the Rio Casino, in Las Vegas, and was won by Joseph Herbert.

The two winners met in Vegas on January 3, when Damian Salas was crowned the 2020 champion.

Chris MoneyMaker Joins Americas Cardroom Team

Chris Moneymaker, the everyman who started it all, an unknown Tennesee accountant crediting with sparking the online poker boom by becoming World champion in 2003, has now joined Americas Cardroom.

Shortly after finishing his contract as a sponsored team pro with PokerStars, Chris Moneymaker is now representing Americas Cardroom, USA facing flagship poker room of the Winning Poker Network.

PokerStars is only available in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan, whereas Americas Cardroom is available to online poker players in 43 out of  50 states – all except Louisiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, Nevada and Washington State.

Happy to be representing the #1 American focused online poker site, Moneymaker joins a team roster full of online poker’s young and upcoming talent, such as vloggers Ryan DePaulo, Jeff “Boski” Sluzinski, Jon Pardy, Drew Gonzalez, and Ebony Kenney.

The Winning Poker network (WPN) was founded in 2001 and has gone from strength to strength in the United States, holding its trademark Venom tournaments with prizepools in excess of nine million dollars.

For players outside the US, there’s another Winning Poker Network skin Black Chip Poker with more deposit options for international players.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Chris Moneymaker back to online poker in the United States,” said ACR rep Michael Harris. “The fact that he’s chosen to wear the red, white, and blue ACR patch speaks volumes about our commitment to doing big things for poker in America and worldwide.”

Where GamStop Customers Can Play Poker

Poker is an extremely popular game and after the famous poker boom we have more than 100 million players in the world. The United Kingdom isn’t an exception, about 3.2% of all people who are aged 18 and above in the United Kingdom play poker occasionally.

Some of them are professional players while most play because the game is so appealing. Poker is a card game in which you need to have the strongest ‘hand’ or card combination to win. Players can call, fold or raise the best as they play.

Poker in the UK is common on GamStop sites. GamStop allows you to create an account and get a self-exclusion period in which all sites that are members of GamStop will ban their account for a specified time frame.

Where To Play Poker

You can find almost countless sites or better said casinos in the UK that offer a great poker game selection. There are different variations of the game. These sites offer a great user experience. However, they are all members of the UKGC and therefore GamStop. According to the regulations, all UKGC sites must use GamStop.

As such, players who are under self-exclusion period won’t be able to play here. Basically, your account will be banned until the period you have selected expires. Luckily there is an alternative.

You can find and play at unblocked poker rooms not on GamStop at NonGamStopBets. In general, these are sites or online casinos that don’t have a UKGC license. They usually have a license from Curacao which still makes them safe to use. But, the main difference is the lack of a UKGC license.

That’s why they don’t have to be members of GamStop and they can accept your account and allow you to play poker without any issues or compactions.

Keep in mind that some sites can be members of GamStop despite the lack of a UKGC license. You won’t be able to play there. Your goal is to find a casino that isn’t a member of the mentioned organization and can accept your game. We must add that these sites are still safe and reliable. Being a member of GamStop is voluntary and it shouldn’t be mandatory decision sites.

What Non GamStop Poker Rooms Can Offer?

They offer literally all the things and even more than local sites that are members of GamStop. Let’s start from the beginning. You still get the ability to gamble at a safe place. They have a license, use customer support, and offer additional protection. Fair gambling is mandatory. They also offer all kinds of games, different variations of poker developed by the best software developers.

Add the fact you get more bonuses and promotions and you can see why so many players play at these websites. Basically, they don’t have to pay high taxes as other UKGC sites so they can offer better promotions to their players. These promotions include free tickets, additional funds to play and so much more.

As some of you may know already, UKGC sites do not accept credit cards as a payment method. Offshore sites still accept them. It is much easier to deposit your fund with a credit card and play poker than to use an alternative method. Credit cards can be used for withdrawals as well. In addition, it is one of the safest methods known to man.

All of these sites offer customer support as well. You can contact them using a live chat which is the fastest and simplest method or you can use the email form, send them an email directly, or call them.

However, the most common options are email and live chat. They can help you resolve the problem within minutes or hours. The main thing to remember is that you get all the perks and all the advantages when playing at casinos and sites with a UKGC licence.

The popularity of online poker is growing rapidly, and the current situations in the world only boosts it, there might be another poker boom in 2021. While the majority of UK players choose local-based poker operators, GamStop customers still have an option. They can play poker at reliable sites that are not members of GamStop but still offer all the perks and impressive benefits.

All you need to remember is that you can play as long as you like and you can get better bonuses. On the other side, there are no issues and complications.

Keep in mind that you need to play responsibly and enjoy. You still get a safe and fair place to enjoy poker without any GamStop limitations that can be annoying for most players at some point.

Get Acquainted: 7 Things you Shouldn’t Forget When Hosting a Poker Game Night in your Condo

Hosting a poker game night in your condo can be fun and relaxing. Unlike playing in casinos where there’s always the pressure. But the experience can be still close to the games you have in casinos. You’ll just have to prepare and plan well. Be sure that you also set up the rules in the game so it’ll go smoothly.

Are you planning to host a poker game at your condo? You may also check out Riverside Residences where you can host the perfect poker game night. Here are  7 things you shouldn’t forget.

1. Set up a Poker Table

The first thing that you do is to set up a poker table. Unlike in casinos, there’s no freestanding poker table in your condo as it will take almost all of your space. Worry not, as there are still options for you. You can choose between a poker table topper or a fold-away poker table.

If you already have a table that can accommodate you and your friends, then a table topper is probably best for you. But if you really want the close casino-like experience, then go for the fold-away table. Overall, there can be as many as 10 players with these.

2. Pick the Game Variation

It’s great that you cannot only host a poker game in your condo but you can also choose the game variation. There 3 variations you can choose from:

  • Texas Hold’em

This is a well-known variation in poker. Even non-poker players can recognize this term.

It is played by each player who dealt 2 hole cards. There are also 5 community cards present on the table which are facing up. The winner of the game is the one who has the strongest 5-card hand. It can consist of 1 to 2 hold cards and 3 to 4 community cards.

  • Omaha

All of the players hold 4 hole cards. Then, the players have to play the best game with 2 hole cards and 3 community cards. The betting is done in rounds.

  • Seven-Card Stud

In this variation, players are dealt with 3 hole cards where 2 of the cards are facing down. The player who gets the lowest value card on the 1 card facing up kicks off the betting.

3. Get Ready with Poker Chips

Of course, you’ll need poker chips. It’s best to get numbered poker chips rather than blank ones. It’s beginner-friendly and it will not cause any confusion along the way.

There are 3 options for the material of a poker chip:

  • Plastic poker chips

These are the cheapest kind among the three. It can be customized with your preferred logo. Needless to say, they can be used by players who don’t play very often.

  • Ceramic poker chips

These are the professional’s choices. Some casinos use ceramic ones so it can really give you the vibe.

  • Clay poker chips

Unless you’re playing a tournament with the world’s best, this should be your last choice. This kind is expensive as it can cost you $20 per chip.

Remember when choosing the chips is that you’ll need at least 300 chips.

4. Choose a Dealer

A poker game cannot push through without a dealer. The dealer’s job is to shuffle and deal the cards. It’s better to choose the dealer ahead of time so the game can start away.

You can vote among your friends who will be the dealer or someone can volunteer. However, if everyone really wants to play then you just have to take turns. The last option you can go with is to hire a professional dealer who can be expensive. Nevertheless, a dealer is a must!

5. Establish House Rules

There are rules in every game and poker is not an exception with that. Before starting your poker game night, you should lay out the house rules. These house rules should be agreed to by all the players. As it wouldn’t work unless everybody agrees to it. There are a standard and comprehensive set of rules for a tournament that you can find on the internet. However, playing in your condo would require some more rules such as if players are allowed to talk during the game and if string betting and announced bets are allowed.

The house rules should be depending on the intensity of your game and the ability of your players. Otherwise, it’ll be unlikely to be obeyed and understood by your co-players.

6. Prepare Snacks and Beverages

Of course, a poker game night isn’t gonna be about playing all night. Snacks and beverages should also be prepared. You don’t expect your friends slash co-players to remain full throughout the night. Drinking and eating will bring more fun and relaxation during your poker game night.

However, it’s best to set up another table for the snacks and beverages. You don’t want some spilling or chewing to happen during the game itself. Finger food such as chips, chicken wings, and the likes would be the best to be served. While beer would be an excellent choice for a drink as you don’t want to play with a bunch of drunk players.

7. Make sure to have Breaks

A timer is required during the game to know when the round ends. This is important because you don’t want your co-players to get agitated. Make sure to take breaks in between games so you can take a breather, eat, and tell stories. But make sure that everyone knows when the break is taking place.

It can be decided by the group when the break is taking place. It can be at regular intervals and it can also be whenever you feel like to.

You are now ready to host a poker game night in your condo! However, if you’re still having doubts or simply want to learn more, see more here. We’re sure that your friend would like to have the next time. You might want to consider an online poker game on your next poker game night.
