Cristiano Ronaldo’s Love of Poker & Gaming

Portugese poker player Ronaldo

Portugese poker, casino and football phenomenon Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is a household name as one of the most famous professional football (soccer for our US readers) stars of all time, playing as a striker for Juventus and captaining the Portugal national team.

Some say he may be the best player the game has ever known, winning 32 major trophies.

Portugal’s Poker Ambassador

Less known though is Ronaldo’s love of poker and casino games. Alongside deals with Nike, Armani, and Tag Heuer he signed a deal with PokerStars in 2018 to officially represent their online poker and casino brand.

The now 36 year old grew up in Madeira, enjoying gambling on the Portugese island in moderation alongside sports and athletics. Follow in Ronaldo’s footsteps at sites like onlinecasinosportugal.pt and PokerStars.

Ronaldo played No Limit Texas Hold’em poker for hours straight with friends in his 20s, and as an ambassador for the largest poker site in the world he rubbed shoulders with some of the best players in the live and online poker scene.

He played at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas and won big at several celebrity poker tournaments, even facing off against Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul in one tournament which raised £15,000 for charity Save the Children.

Brazilian football star Neymar and tennis champion Rafael Nadal also later joined PokerStars as team pros.

Ronaldo once stated while football is ‘his world’, but added that poker has always been ‘his game.’ From time to time he is said to like to go to casinos – sometimes in disguise so he isn’t mobbed by fans – and play some of his favourite casino games.

Worth over a billion dollars, he has nonetheless always stayed humble and never bragged about his money, acting as a role model.

Palms Casino Controversy

In 2021 American former model Kathryn Mayorga accused Ronaldo of assaulting her at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

According to documents filed by her lawyers at a federal courthouse in Nevada, she sued for $78 million in damages and other costs. The legal case never came to a resolution as Ronaldo settled outside of court, calling the incident a ‘fabrication’ and ‘defamation campaign’.

Mayorga claimed the pair had met at the casino’s nightclub and gambled together at the Vegas resort. Real Madrid took legal action against a Portugese newspaper for printing false claims.
