Online Casino Revenue in Pennsylvania Hits New Record to Close Successful 2023

The online casino industry is well and truly thriving in the United States if the latest set of numbers is anything to go by. The final figures from 2023 meant that at the close of the year, the total revenue accumulated by the combined igaming and sports betting market and offline gambling was at an incredible $5.7 billion.

That number is a sizable jump from the previous year, which saw the total of $5.2 billion achieved. That’s a rise of 9.2% and it’s worth remembering that 2022 was itself a record year for the industry.

The increases were across the board, from online casinos to sports betting and also PA poker, and it was, unsurprisingly, physical slots that made up the biggest share of the revenue, raking in an astonishing $2.46 billion though it is worth noting that table games in brick-and-mortar establishments was actually a little down on 2022.

Revenue direct from online providers stood at a very healthy $1.74 billion, an increase of over 27% on 2022, while the sports betting handle (namely the amount placed on bets) for the year hit $7.68 billion with that resulting in revenue in Pennsylvania of $458.6 million, an increase of 14.3% on the previous year.

December 2023 was also a record month in terms of revenue from gambling in the state with $534.2 million brought in, smashing the previous record of $515.3 million set in March 2023 and also was up 12.5% on the same month in 2022.

As for online casino action in December 2023, once again, new milestones were passed as the market brought in $204.2 million in revenue, which is the first time in Pennsylvania that the $200 million barrier has been broken.

On the ongoing upturn in the market, influential expert and PlayPennsylvania Managing Editor Chris Imperiale commented;

“Pennsylvania online casinos continue to break records. This December, they exceeded $200 million in gross revenue for the first time ever, finishing the month with a total of over $204 million.”

“The new all-time, all-market US mark narrowly took down the previous best from November by about $12 million. December saw an increase in production of about 6.4% from last month, while the performance topped year-over-year figures by more than 22%.”

“This is now the fourth consecutive month with revenue surpassing $186 million. With 2023 now complete, PA online casinos ended the year with over $2.1 billion in revenue, setting another new record.” Imperiale concluded.

Interestingly, though these numbers represented a real bump for Pennsylvania, the state as a whole has actually fallen back into third place when it comes to the state’s overall gambling revenue.

They had previously been sitting in second place to Nevada (a position that is clearly down to Las Vegas’s standing as the pantheon of gambling locations) based on 2022 numbers, but despite the big increases seen in Pennsylvania, New Jersey has actually fought its way back to take back the second spot that they had previously secured prior to 2022.
