Who is BTCDEMON? Cash Game Expert Lukabrate Faces a Mystery Opponent
There’s been some buzz on social media this week surrounding a new player on the scene, going by the name ‘BTCDemon’.
The buzz attracted the attention of high stakes poker reviewer Bobby James, who sat down to give his thoughts on the action.
BTCDemon took on cash game expert Chris “Lukabrate” Nguyen, with the heads-up clash producing a staggering $500,000 pot.
The $500,000 Pot
Playing almost $556,000 deep, Lukabrate opened on the button to $4,400. BTCDemon raised to $17,222, Lukabrate 4-bet to $60,000. BTCDemon 5-bet to $150,600 and Lukabrate went all-in for $555,432. BTCDemon called.
Lukabrate showed K♥K♣ and BTCDemon showed A♦Q♥.
The board ran out 10♣Q♣4♥9♣Q♦ giving BTCDemon a set of Queens and he scooped the pot worth $554,832.
Hand Analysis
Lukabrate’s decision to get all-in with K♥K♣ is fairly straightforward. After 4-betting, he faced a 5-bet from BTCDemon and had one of the strongest starting hands in poker.
The more interesting decision came from BTCDemon with A♦Q♥. After 5-betting to $150,600, he faced a shove for another $404,832. Calling off more than $400,000 with ace-queen is a very aggressive decision, particularly against a range that should contain a lot of premium hands.
Some might say that this was a bad call however in the end BTCDemon’s gamble luckily paid off.
From Lukabrate’s perspective, there isn’t much to criticise about the outcome. He got more than half a million dollars in with pocket kings against ace-queen and was simply unlucky to lose.
In fact, Lukabrate had 91% equity before the river card came. To lose that much money on the turn of a card must have been painful.
The main talking point was BTCDemon’s willingness to call such a massive preflop shove with AQ, which gives some insight into just how aggressively, or loosely, he played.
